On 23 March 2026 and 24 July 2026, the Widow Empowerment Project organized Panchayat-level legal literacy programmes to help rural widows and community members understand their legal rights, social security schemes, and available support services. The programmes created a safe and supportive space where women could openly discuss the difficulties they often face after the death of their husbands, including fear of losing their homes or property, family disputes, concerns related to children’s custody, difficulties in accessing government services, and domestic violence.

During the sessions, participants learned about their property and inheritance rights under the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005. They were informed that Class I heirs, including the widow, children, and mother of the deceased, have legal rights in the inheritance. The women were also encouraged to understand their residential rights and advised not to sign any property relinquishment, settlement, or other legal document under pressure or fear, or without fully understanding its legal implications.

The programme also focused on government welfare and social security schemes available to widows and vulnerable families. Participants received information about the Lakshmibai Social Security Pension Scheme, Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme, and National Family Benefit Scheme, including basic eligibility requirements and application procedures. Information was also shared about scholarships for children and services available through Anganwadi centres. Women were encouraged to join Jivika Self-Help Groups, which can provide opportunities for savings, access to affordable credit, livelihood activities, and greater financial independence. Skill development and vocational training opportunities were also discussed.

An important component of the programme was raising awareness about free legal assistance. Participants were informed about the services available through the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. These services include free legal counselling and representation, Lok Adalats, mediation, and other forms of legal support. Participants were also provided with important helpline numbers, including the free legal services helpline 15100, Women’s Helpline 181, and Child Helpline 1098.

The programmes helped women build confidence in understanding and claiming their rights. Many participants openly shared their concerns and sought clarification regarding property rights, pensions, government schemes, and family-related issues. Conducted twice during the year, these legal literacy programmes have become an important platform for connecting rural widows with legal and social protection services and supporting them to live with greater dignity, confidence, and security.
